THE Faculty of Dentistry (FOD) at SEGi University participated in the annual Mouth Cancer Awareness Week 2017 (MCAW 2017) in support the Oral Cancer Research and Coordinating Centre (OCRCC) to increase public awareness on oral cancer.
The MCAW 2017 week from Nov 26 until Dec 3, began with a 3.5km walkathon at Shah Alam National Botanical Garden on Nov 26.
The walkathon received overwhelming responses from the public and it was officiated by the Health Ministry’s Oral Health principal director.
FOD Dean Datuk Dr Khairiyah Abd Muttalib led a group of 13 staff members and 30 students from SEGi University as a show of support for the initiative.
The event began with a low-impact aerobics session conducted by SEGi FOD dental technologist, Roseda.
As part of the support for the MCAW 2017 week, FOD raised funds and also donated disposable mouth mirrors and probes for oral screening.
Apart from the walkathon, there were also other activities such as poster competition, and exhibition booths along the route to educate the attendees on oral cancer.
Posters by two SEGi’s dental students, Gun Shen Wei and Liow Weng Chong made the shortlist. Meanwhile, three other students – Melissa Wong, Sum Chern Yang and Tan Peik Khim manned the final marks for poster judging.
To liven up the atmosphere, a dental busker group performed a song on oral cancer for the crowd. There was also a good old flash mob to cheer the attendees.
