This year for the first time School of Hospitality and Tourism (SOHT) students from Bangladesh organizing Pohela Boishakh, or the Bengali New Year, falls on April 14 or 15 every year with regard to the Gregorian calendar. However, according to the Bengali calendar, the current year is 1425. The name itself is derived from the word “Baishakh,” which is the first month of their calendar.
The event had full support from the Bangladesh Embassy, which few of them especially Md. Sayedul Islam (Counsellor, Bangladesh High Commission)*Awami League is one of the Political Party in Bangladesh, and they are one of the sponsors for this event,Md Mokbul Hossain (President, Malaysia Awami League), Kamruzzaman Kamal (General Secretary, Malaysia Awami League), Dato Akter Hossain (Vice President, Malaysia Awami League), Md Shariful Islam (President BSOM)Bangladesh Student Council, Shwakat Hoque Josef (Organizing Secretary, Malaysia Awami League), Ahmedul kabir (Journalist) Jamuna TV & Jugantore newspaper did came joining with 80 students celebrating one of the biggest festivals in their culture, blending Bengali culture of food, love of arts, literatue and music on 13 April 2018.
Students and community members donned traditional clothing. Women donned classic saris draped the Bengali style, flowers in their hair and huge, round bindis on their foreheads while men wore kurtas (long shirts). The ambiance and decorations showed the Bengali culture. The guests were entertained with Bengali songs, dances, poetry recitations and traditional folk songs. Following the performances, Bengali cuisine was served to the guests. The night ended with token appreciation giving.
