A group of engineering students from Faculty of Engineering and the Built Environment (FoEBE) had visited Kampung Orang Asli Gurney, Ulu Yam to better understand the Orang Asli community.
Under the programme “social responsibility service for perkampungan Orang Asli” held on Aug 22, enthusiastic participants donated food and other daily necessities to the community in the village.
The group also brought along various construction materials and tools to repair some of the damaged houses. Students were divided into different groups and tasked with different responsibilities including cement paving, painting, door and window replacement as well as wood paneling.
The eager student volunteers painted the door, replaced windows and fixed the wood paneling for one of the villagers, Mat Tarus Pi.
Three guest lecturers of quantity surveying programme – Zamzarina Md. Judyar, Aminah Mohd Bakhari and AP Sr. Faris Omar voluntarily joined the programme. Meanwhile, Amiza Abas and Nor Azizah Zalin supervised and headed the event.
Their good deeds did not end there as the students returned several days later on Aug 29 and distributed other necessities such as rice, flour and sugar to the villagers. They were joined by Hulu Selangor District Council (MDHS) councillor June Leow.
The student volunteers shared their highs and lows, sweat and tears throughout the programme and it was one of the most memorable experiences for them during their university years.
Good job SEGians!
