FOED students visit Google Malaysia

SEVENTEEN students from the Faculty of Education (FOED), SEGi University visited the Google Malaysia office in Axiata Tower recently to learn how technology can be used as a tool in education.

The one-day visit saw participation from 16 undergraduate students in Bachelor of Education (Hons) and a postgraduate student from FOED, and they were accompanied by Prof. Dr Gurnam Kaur Sidhu and two FOED lecturers, Lim Hwee Jean and Priyadarshini Mutukrishnan.

It was a timely visit for the undergraduate students as they are currently taking the course, Technology in Education.

The FOED has been collaborating with Google following the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) in 2016 to carry out G Suite for Education programmes and Certifications (Google Certified Educator).

Google is known for providing a lot of perks for its staffs, including free lunch in its cafeteria. Staff and students from SEGi were also treated to a buffet spread upon their arrival in Google Malaysia office.

The Head of Education at Google Malaysia, Rahayu Ramli welcomed them and proceeded to presenting the key points of Google for Education.

She also explained innovative concepts and ideas on the future of education alongside the advancement of technology such as the Google Cardboard, which is an affordable virtual reality device that allows students to use it in the classroom to go on virtual trips via Google Expeditions.

The students were given an opportunity to throw in questions after the presentation came to an end. Subsequently, they were given a quick tour of the office.

Students were enthusiastic about the prospects of advancing with technology in education and their eagerness is important as these trainee teachers will be shaping the younger minds in the future.
