If you enjoyed doing experiments and handling equipment during Science classes in secondary school, then Biomedical Science is just right for you. There is more than meets the eye, though, as you advance in this path.

You can begin right after SPM with a Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology, or upon completion of A-Levels/STPM or its equivalent. Biomedical Science programmes are in-line with the National Higher Education Strategic Plan to produce a desirable percentage of scientists and researchers in Malaysia to cater to the growing demand of the healthcare industry.

What is Biomedical Science?

Biomedical Science mostly involves study of human biology, as well as the study of viruses, bacteria and other life forms which influence the human body. Biomedical Science students will embark on a study of understanding the human body and will be exposed to various medical diagnostics and its latest developments covering the areas of anatomy and physiology, clinical biochemistry, human genetics, medical microbiology, cellular pathology, blood sciences and pharmacology.

This programme explores the principles and practice of biomedical science and how they are applied in industrial research and medicine. This provides a strong foundation to pursue academic research and a career in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. Students will have the opportunity to learn how to use sophisticated automated equipment, microscopes and other hi-tech laboratory equipment that they would eventually use at work.

Biomedical sciences graduates will have the skills to conduct medical research, perform a key role in screening for diseases, identify causes of diseases and evaluate the effectiveness of a treatment prescribed by the medical practitioners as well as researching for causes and cures for diseases.

Graduates of the programme will have a range of transferable skills valued by many employers such as analytical and problem-solving skills, data analysis, project management and teamwork. Careers that are directly related to this qualification include biomedical scientist, haematologist, clinical biochemist, clinical cytogeneticist, microbiologist, science officer as well as an academician.

Where to study Biomedical Science?

The Diploma in Medical Laboratory Technology is available at SEGi campuses at Kota Damansara, Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Sarawak, while the Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Hons) programme is available only at SEGi University at Kota Damansara.
