Developing a Mathematical Mind in Young Children

SEGi University and Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) got together to organise a workshop on “Developing a Mathematical Mind in Young Children” at the SEGi University campus.

Recent research has revealed that children can possess more in-depth mathematical knowledge and experience than previously believed. There is also growing evidence to suggest that early mathematics plays a significant role in later education since early mathematics skills are more powerful predictors of later academic achievement than attentional, socio-emotional or reading skills.

TA total of 95 participants which included Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) teachers and students from all over the Klang Valley attended the workshop to explore how educators can take advantage of the mathematical knowledge and experience amongst children in early years of schooling.

The two keynote speakers were Prof Berinderjeet Kaur from the National Institute of Education Singapore and Prof Parmjit Singh from University Teknologi MARA, Selangor.

There are also workshops by Prof Parmjit Singh on “Mathematical Thinking and Mental Computation in Early Years of Schooling”, and 3 distinguished academicians from SEGi: Prof Mogana Dhamotharan on “Using songs and stories in preschool mathematics”, Dr Irene Leow on “Using play to promote the development of mathematics and mathematical concepts in young children” and Dr Palanisamy K. Veloo on “Prenumber skills for early years of schooling – patterning”.

The workshop participants found the workshops interesting and useful in their work among children.
